ENG 110 Rouillon Class Guide

What is a Primary Source?

A historical primary source is the raw material of history, so this might be an image, writing, or artifact created during a period of study. Examples of primary sources include:

  • photographs, audiovisual material, or drawings
  • letters, diaries, memoirs, government documents, or newspapers
  • vases, tools, religious material, etc.

In this course, you will look at primary sources to learn more about historical periods. To understand primary sources more clearly, you will need to use secondary and tertiary sources to better understand context.

Questions to Ask

When you look at a primary source material, you want to ask questions of the material, such as:

  • Why was the material created?
  • What questions does this make you ask?
  • What was happening at the time that the material was created?

As an example, try asking questions of this image:

Dr. Martin Luther King, Coretta Scott King, and Robert Wagner

This is how the Library of Congress categorizes this material:

Mayor Wagner greets Dr. & Mrs. Martin Luther King, Jr, at City Hall
